JANUARY 26, 2010 AMERICAN INDOOR FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES TRENTON FRANCHISE FOR 2011
TRENTON, NJ (January 26, 2010) - The American Indoor Football Association is awarding a new expansion franchise for Trenton, New Jersey. The franchise, to be known as the Trenton Steel, will begin play in 2011. The team draws its name from the region's rich manufacturing tradition. The logo is inspired by the famed Lower Free Bridge, known for the famous words "Trenton Makes, the World Takes."
The Steel will play at the Sun National Bank Center, a state-of-the-art arena which seats approximately 7,500 fans for indoor football. The building boasts sky boxes and an in-house television production facility. Sight lines are exceptional.
The announcement comes on the heels of a very successful weekend for the AIFA. The league held its annual Kickoff Classic Saturday night in Richmond, Virginia. An enthusiastic crowd of approximately 5,000 fans welcomed the new Richmond Raiders franchise to that city. The Raiders rewarded the fans with a 49-46 victory over a Select Team of AIFA All-Stars. The game also marked the debut of the AIFA's new national television syndication. The telecast of the Kickoff Classic was beamed to over 40-million TV households nationwide.
"The AIFA is on a roll right now," said AIFA co-founder John Morris. "The awarding of this franchise fits right into the league's momentum. Trenton is a perfect fit for the AIFA...the marketplace, the building...everything," Morris continued. "With so many league franchises nearby, the rivalries will be fantastic!"
One of those rivalries will involve the New Jersey Revolution, which joined the AIFA for the 2010 season. To help introduce the AIFA to Trenton, the Revolution will play its regular season home game with the Harrisburg Stampede at the Sun National Bank Center. The date for the game is Saturday, June 12th.
